Geosynthetic clay liners (GCL) are manufactured by trapping bentonite-based raw material between woven or non-woven geotextiles, and joining them with a special needling method. Upon contact with liquid, the bentonite in between the two geotextiles swells and forms an impermeable layer. GCLs, being dynamic geosynthetic barriers, can swell up to approximately 20 times their original size upon contact with liquid. This impermeable layer prevents the seepage of hazardous chemicals into the ground. Similarly, it can be used to prevent all liquids from seeping underground.
